LOON

Tuning up, massed bands and leaving the competition field.
The 2009 season is now over. It ended on a beautiful if windy day at Loon Mountain New Hampshire. We placed 6th out of 11 bands. We will be starting up in a few weeks to see if we can do even better next year. We had a wonderful potluck dinner at one of the Condos across from the mountain and celebrated another year together. Garth got a 4th place out of a huge group in his solo 2/4 competition on Sunday. Congratulations to Garth.

Garth tuning up and talking to the judges.
They have the compeition on the pavement? How does it sound?
From talking to others, and according to the judges sheets, our sound and tone was one of the best out there. The comments read along the lines of, “nice full sound and very good tuning and tone for such a small pipe corp”. We need to get bigger and better, but we were again a matter of a just “some” points from being in the money. We ended up 2 and 8 in piping,
5 in ensemble, and 10 in drumming.
I hadn’t thought about the sound difference on pavement so I didn’t pay attention. I do know we sounded good out there. Gordie judged bands there 2 years ago so he would have a better idea.
I really hope the g3 gets back there next year.
don’t suppose you captured any video of the performance did you?
Mardi took a video but other bands nearby and the wind across the mike pretty much ruins it not to mention the guy that ran into her halfway through.
Another thought being that the g4 regularly practices on pavement at R&K, maybe we just don’t think about it to much.
Who knows, possibly the pavement helped the volume of our small pipe corp, especially if we were well tuned. It could probably be a detriment to a larger band that was badly tuned.
I definitely think that CRC as a whole needs to attend Loon next year. It is the kind of event that binds a band, regardless of grade level. Plus it is just a whole lot of fun.
